['bʌfələʊ], Stadt im Bundesstaat New York, USA, am Ostende des Eriesees, am Ausfluss des Niagara River und an der Abzweigung des New York State Barge Canal, (1990) 328 100 Einwohner (1950: 580 100 Einwohner); katholischer Bischofssitz; Zweig der State University of New York, Colleges, Kunst-, naturwissenschaftliches Museum; zoologischer Garten. Buffalo ist ein bedeutender Bahnknotenpunkt und ein Haupthafen am Sankt-Lorenz-Seeweg, Umschlagplatz für Massengüter; Getreidemühlen, elektrochemische und elektrometallurgische Industrie (Energie liefern die Kraftwerke an den Niagarafällen), Stahl-, Kfz- und Flugzeugindustrie, Farb- und Tapetenwerke, Wurlitzer-Werk (Orgeln, Musikautomaten). Seit 1927 ist Buffalo durch die Peace Bridge (»Friedensbrücke«) mit Fort Erie (Kanada) verbunden.
 
 
Das 1894/95 von D. Adler und L. H. Sullivan errichtete Guaranty Building ist ein Beispiel der frühen Hochhausbauweise der Chicagoer Schule. 1904 entstand »Martin House«, eines der Präriehäuser von F. L. Wright. 1938 erbaute Eliel Saarinen die Kleinhaus Music Hall. In der Albright-Knox Art Gallery besitzt Buffalo eine der bedeutendsten Gemälde- und Skulpturensammlungen (v. a. zeitgenössische Kunst).
 
 
Buffalo wurde nach 1801 als New Amsterdam gegründet und erhielt 1810 seinen heutigen Namen. Im 19. Jahrhundert, besonders nach dem Bau des Eriekanals (1825), nahm die Stadt (seit 1832) einen raschen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung.
